U.S. Spending on Behavioral Health Topped $280 Billion in 2020

In 2009, the United States as a whole spent $172 billion on behavioral health care, with $148 billion of that going towards substance use treatment and support, and $24 billion going toward mental health treatment and support. In the decade that followed, spending on behavioral health care had a compounded annual growth rate of 4.6%, leading to $280 billion worth of expenditures in 2020, with $238 billion going towards substance abuse treatment and $42 billion going toward mental health services, as reported on axios.com.

According to an analysis by Bourne Partners, spending on substance abuse treatment in 2020 went primarily to providers, including specialty substance abuse centers, psychiatric inpatient hospitals and office-based care, as well as prescription drugs.
