HHS Renews Determination of Nationwide Opioid Public Health Emergency

July 13, 2023

On July 7, 2023, Secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Xavier Becerra renewed the determination that an opioid public health emergency (PHE) exists nationwide.

The opioid PHE was first declared on October 26, 2017 by former HHS Acting Secretary Eric D. Hargan, has been continually renewed since then, and was most recently renewed on April 1, 2023. The April 1st declaration renewal expired on July 1, 2023; however, this current renewal is retroactive to July 1, 2023, so officially, there has been no lapse in the nationwide opioid PHE.
