HHS Secretary Renews Determination of Opioid Public Health Emergency

January 4, 2024

On December 21, 2023, United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra renewed the determination that an opioid public health emergency exists nationwide.

The determination was reached "as a result of the continued consequences of the opioid crisis affecting our nation . . . after consultation with public health officials as necessary."

This renewal continues the declaration of the existence of a nationwide opioid public health emergency, originally declared on October 26, 2017 by former HHS Acting Secretary Eric D. Hargan, and most recently renewed effective September 29, 2023.

The renewal determination went into effect on December 28, 2023.
